Turns out he murdered his wife so he was starved to death and cursed. A very theatrical old ghost haunts a castle in rural England. The plot of The Canterville Ghost is pretty straight forward. The ambassador moves his family into a castle, which is known to be haunted. My two favourite works by Oscar Wilde are The Picture of Dorian Gray and the novella, The Canterville Ghost. This modern retelling of the classic tale focuses on three families: the aristocratic Cantervilles, the Romani Lovells and the American Otises. First published in 1887, Wilde’s tale is an eerie, heart-warming story with touches of humor, following Sir Simon de Canterville’s ghost, which has been dwelling in his ancestral castle for. The Canterville Ghost is a novella parody featuring an ambassador and a spirit. Hiram has no idea that Simon has been haunting the grounds for five centuries nor that his family is about to face the enmity of the local aristocracy. 3/3 Filled with pity for the ghost of the house, Virginia agrees to help Sir Simon find peace. Resident ghost Sir Simon de Canterville is none-too-pleased when an American family moves into his family’s grand English estate after tech billionaire Hiram Otis purchases it. Her timeless classic Millions of Cats is currently the oldest American picture book still in print. As for author and artist Wanda Gag, two of her books were awarded Newbery Honors and two more awarded Caldecott Honors. On a related note, in 1939 the Motion Picture Academy of America presented legendary filmmaker Walt Disney with an Honorary Oscar but unlike traditional Oscar statuettes, this Oscar included 7 smaller dwarf-size Oscars flanking the normal-size statue on a stepped-down base, in recognition of Disney's iconic film adaptation and interpretation of the classic tale. Very light soiling on the front of the DJ. There is a wrinkle to the top of the DJ on rear near header. DJ shows rubbing along the edges and folds with a couple of small closed edge tears. As for the original DJ it is not as beautiful as the book but it remains highly desirable and most collectible. The book itself would grade fine if not for shelf-rubbing on rear panel's bottom corner tip with a touch at crown and heel. Decorative binding is bright and impeccably clean. Book is tight and clean no writing within. To this end, Le Guin not only picks up the tradition of science fiction as a vehicle of cultural destabilization (as with Shelley and Cavendish) but recasts this legacy in the atmosphere of 20th century “progress”- to blast down confining, finite (the truly performative “unreal”) constructs of the very “real” infinities of science fiction. But that’s her art- you aren’t familiar with the planet or the people or their social structures but you do (hopefully) recognize misogyny, racism, classism, ableism, discrimination, cruelty, and exploitation when you see it in a narrative, and you notice it in all of its gore because it’s the only thing that looks familiar. She doesn’t want to throw you into a “new” or “blazing world” (even when she does) for the sake of the imagined world she is doing so to draw into the light the familiar grievances that are so ingrained in our “real” lives that we cannot see, much less be outraged by them. Much in the vein of Mary Shelley in the 19th and Margaret Cavendish in the 17th century, Le Guin’s work does not so much disturb as she does destabilize. This was my first full foray into the bright-dark world of Le Guin, and as with many famed authors I am easing into for the first time, a sharp collection of electric short stories was the right call for me- and if the same is true for you, start here, but know as I have learned that Le Guin did not come to make you feel comfortable. Jacquetta’s story is one of intrigue, power, and survival. In particular, Gregory’s focus on Jacquetta is fascinating. Her books are not only entertaining and informative, but they also serve as a reminder of the incredible strength and resilience of women throughout the ages. She has a unique ability to breathe life into the stories of women who have been largely ignored by history. Philippa Gregory is not your typical historian or writer. We follow her from her teenage years to middle age, as she navigates the dangerous world of medieval politics and power struggles. But in Gregory’s capable hands, Jacquetta’s story comes alive. The novel takes place during the War of the Roses, a time of great turmoil and political upheaval in England.Īt the center of the story is Jacquetta of Luxembourg, a woman who is often overlooked in historical accounts. The Lady of the Rivers is a compelling historical fiction novel by Philippa Gregory that tells the story of Jacquetta of Luxembourg, a noblewoman with a gift for sorcery and a connection to the rivers that flow through the land. If you’ve been following Gregory’s work, you’ll be thrilled to see her take a step back in time from the Tudor era and explore a new period of English history. Prepare to be transported back in time to the tumultuous period of the Wars of the Roses with Philippa Gregory’s novel, The Lady of the Rivers. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
